About

Helen Butler is an artist and design historian based in London.

"I am interested in how we deem collages to be betrayals of the unconscious, yet question why our minds often wander to the same conclusions. I am intrigued not merely with the individual narratives and connections that can occur, but by the actual process of connecting, collecting and the constant search for meaning and pattern.

Images float around without landing upon any recognisable narrative, recreating states of free association, aimless drifting and endless referral. By abstracting forms through cutting, juxtapositioning, magnifying and upscaling, the collected fragments are obscured and made strange; the search for meaning is at once heightened and disrupted."
